The prostate is a gland in men. It helps make semen, the fluid that contains sperm. The prostate surrounds the tube that carries urine away from the bladder and out of the body. A young man"s prostate is about the size of a walnut. It slowly grows larger with age
Enlarged prostate (BPH), or benign prostatic hyperplasia-
As a man ages, the prostate can grow larger. Because it surrounds part of the urethra, the enlarged prostate can squeeze the urethra. This causes problems in the passing of urine. Ayurveda describes it with two conditions known as mootrakrucha and mootraaghaata.
Mootrakrucha or strangury is characterised by mild to severe pain in passing urine while in mootraaghaata, there is total suppression or intermittent flow of urine during urination Typically, these problems passing urine don"t occur in men until they are age 50 or older. They can, though, occur earlier.
• Causes of Enlarged Prostate:
Enlargement of prostate is caused by vitiated vayu and apaana vayu.
This vitiation is caused by
Controlling the urge of urination.
Controlling the urge of defecation.
Over indulgence in sex.
Consuming dry food.
Consuming very cold and less quantity of food
Old age .
General weakness .
Indigestion.
Symptoms of an enlarged prostate may include:
• Trouble starting to urinate or urinating freely
• Having to urinate frequently, particularly at night
• Feeling that the bladder is not empty after urinating
• Feeling a sudden urge to urinate
• Having to stop and start repeatedly while urinating
• Having to strain to urinate
To maintain prostate health, it is important for men who have early symptoms of BPH to see their doctor. BPH is a progressive disease. It can lead to serious, although rare, health problems, such as kidney or bladder damage.
